I’m Bored! Summer Survival Skills for Parents
Neurotypical kids, kids with ADHD, kids with autism and kids of all ages have trouble shifting into summer-mode. Why?
Suzanne Cresswell is a retired school occupational and physical therapist. She has written a book that will help you understand your child’s change in behavior when school is out for summer break. Come to her workshop and receive, at no cost to you, a copy of her book, Unique Learner Solutions.
Learn that boredom comes in many forms. Sometimes children are bored because they have nothing to do. Other times, highly active children are bored because they aren't engaged.
Learn that boredom is a true physiologic state. The brain and body ‘accommodates’ to an activity and the brain just tunes it out.
Learn that children don't have the ability to override their impatience. Delaying the need for instant gratification is a life skill just as important as properly opening and closing doors, crossing the street safely and learning when to say please and thank you.
Learn that when your child may look as though he or she is merely playing, important work goes on within. Young kids will be growing new brain interconnections. Older kids will learn how to facilitate certain messages and inhibit others to sending information to the proper places in their brain and body.
Learn that play is when your child puts all the messages together into useful perceptions and behaviors. And that is definitely not boring!
